In this book when the Simmses came over claiming that Hammer and David had "jumped" Charlie. And the Sheriff listened to the simmses just because they are white is breaking this rule. Although the sheriff is listening to the people he is not listening to all of the people. And that is why he is breaking this rule.
Throughout the whole book this core democratic value was being broken. The people in that time period didn't care if an African American was 13 or 30, they were hung for a crime that was usually caused by a white person and/or people. ~Stana
